These Women Live the Call . . .

This page tells the stories of many women across NC who "live the call" every day in their communities. They are just a sampling of the countless WMU women who live each day on mission for Christ.

God's Word tells us in Matthew 19:13-14 when the little children were brought to Jesus, he said, "Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Some of my fondest memories of WMU are singing "Jesus Loves the Little Children," hearing this scripture and learning that even I could be a missionary. I remember how much I enjoyed learning about missionaries - and learning that Jesus loved me and ALL the children of the world. I owe so much to the wonderful mission leaders that touched my life and taught a little girl that she could be a missionary wherever she was! I discovered that I did not have to travel around the world, far from home, but that I could be a missionary at school, home and wherever God placed me. More...

The Mission Crafters of Aversboro Road Church in Garner is a new Women on Mission group. The leader of the group, Nancy, had a vision to use her crafting abilities to reach out to families at home and abroad with God's love. The Mission Crafters are knitting baby items and donating part to an international organization and part to a local organization to distribute to families in need. These women are compelled by love!

Karen Burnette works at a children’s home as a resident counselor. This job allows her to have flexibility to do many things with her church and family as well as minister to children in a very special way. She always wanted to adopt a child, but now she gets to work with many children who need special care. Karen “lives the call” full-time both in her job and her personal life.

Helen Chewning has served as a church WMU Director many years and has trained younger women to take her place. She is retired, but even while working, she helped start Anson Crisis Ministry, ministered to Angel Tree children and volunteered for events like Ladies’ Auxiliary at a hospital and Christmas Miracle (a meal for underprivileged). She now serves as Anson Association WMU Mission Involvement Consultant. Helen has “lived the call” for years and still does!

She now serves as one of the site coordinators for the program and has assisted her daughter in tutoring three girls her daughter adopted out of a bad situation. Marilyn also “lives the call” serving as Peachland Church WMU Director and Women on Mission Facilitator and Anson Association WMU Growth Consultant.

The Ruby Stancil WMU group is “living the call.” Visiting the boys & girls home in Lake Waccamaw, they discovered a girls’ cottage needed rescuing. They could not let the nine precious girls live in the conditions they saw. The group prayed and felt God leading them to "adopt" the cottage. These women on mission and some men from the church did an incredible “home makeover,” providing new paint, carpet, kitchen and furniture and, best of all, putting bright smiles on the girls’ faces. They praise God for providing everything for the project!

For years Mary Ann Crouch has been “living the call” as the “Protestant Mother Teresa” at Jackson Park Ministries/Stonewall Jackson Homes. Twelve years ago she “rounded up” Providence and Carmel Baptist members and began an after school tutoring program for children. It runs from October through April on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Mary Ann and the tutors witness to the students and their families in many ways. Recently one of their “graduates” returned to tutor a student himself!

Harriett Bogges "lives the call" every day of the year. She calls and visits the sick and homebound every week and cooks and delivers meals to those who have had surgery or have been sick. She also has helped to start a second WMU group in her church that meets on Sunday evenings. She is someone you can call on to pray for someone, and you know it is done. Harriet's actions and prayer life demonstrate her commitment to living for Christ!

Aldena Whitlow uses her considerable organizational skills as a retired school teacher to help organize Anson Association’s Literacy Program and volunteers as a site coordinator. She serves the association as Children in Action Consultant and Ministers’ Wives Coordinator as well. Aldena is “living the call” using the gifts and experience God has given her to reach out to others in her area.

The Women on Mission at Deep Springs Church in Peachland reached out to an unwed mother by giving her a baby shower, complete with a corsage and refreshments to let her know that they wanted to help her know Christ’s redemptive, forgiving love. These women are “living the call” by demonstrating God’s love in tangible ways.

Sandra Pliescott “lives the call” by bringing the joy of Christmas to people in her community. She organizes Operation Christmas Miracle - a Christmas Day event when meals are served at her church for underprivileged people and police and fire department employees. Meals are also taken to people who cannot leave their homes. Sandra has served in several WMU capacities in her local church, including WMU Director, and is employed at a local nursing home.

On the fourth Tuesday of each month, the group goes to Wesley Pines and Linkhaw nursing home facilities in Lumberton. They think it is a wonderful way they can share the love of God. The group is very faithful and enjoys sharing a singing ministry with these special people of God. These women “live the call” with their time and presence to those who need special care.

Larissa Brown of Union Grove Church in Yadkinville is a prominent part of the mission work there. She recently started a young women’s group, a food pantry and a fundraising plan for an Orting, WA mission trip. One of her most recent ideas is “Take A Cake Sunday”. People can take desserts home from church, which is especially good around the holidays. Larissa’s enthusiasm is contagious, and everyone wants to get involved in her activities. She is a second grade school teacher, wife and mother who "lives the call" in all areas of her life.

McDonald Church in Rockingham is collecting hygiene items and packing "kits" to give to the local thrift store. When people come in with a voucher from Social Services for needed items after they have been burned out, they will also be given a hygiene kit. The kits will have cards with John 3:16 inside and a picture of the church on the front. Their GAs and Acteens will pack the kits and help deliver them to the thrift store. Members of all ages of McDonald Church are "living the call" to share Christ in tangible ways in their community!

The ladies at Wingate Church began a prayer shawl ministry about three years ago. As each shawl is completed and brought to the group, the ladies lay hands on the shawl and pray for the recipient. The recipient might be someone who is grieving over the loss of a child or spouse or is suffering from an illness or another kind of grief or loss. When the shawl is delivered, it is wrapped around the recipient with the words that the shawl is to be a reminder that God cares and loves her and that the ladies of the prayer shawl ministry are also lifting her up in prayer. These women "live the call", showing Christ's love through prayer and action.
