Literacy Missions involves three different approaches:
ESL – English as a Second Language – teaching those who speak and write another language the basics of English.
ARW – Adult Reading and Writing – teaching adults who speak English but do not have the necessary skills to read and write at appropriate levels.
TCY – Tutoring Children and Youth – helping children and youth with their homework as well as basic learning skills.
If you or someone in your church is interested in ministering to people through literacy missions while introducing them to Jesus, there is a ministry opportunity available. Barbara Martin leads the Literacy Missions efforts of the Baptist State Convention. You may find more information about this group and the training available by going to the North Carolina Baptist Convention website at www.ncbaptist.org and click on Church Ministries and then on Special Ministries.
Even if you do not feel led to be trained to teach, there are many ways WMU groups can help by providing teaching materials and helping with physical needs that many of the students have. For more information contact Barbara Martin at omartins@juno.com.
