Missions Extravaganza SHINE Volunteers

Who: Young women from across North Carolina
What: Volunteering at the WMU NC’s annual conference and Missions Extravaganza.
When: April 16-18, 2010. If possible, please arrive by 10:00 am on the 16th. We will be finished by 1:00 pm on the 18th. (If you cannot arrive by 10, let us know. We may still be able to use you!)
Where: Ridgecrest Conference Center near Asheville, NC
Why: The WMU has spent the past couple of years focusing on getting young women involved in WMU and missions. This is a tremendous opportunity for interested young women to see what WMU NC is all about and meet other women with hearts for missions, all while serving the people of God.
Cost: Because we will actually be working at the conference, we are not charging our volunteers anything!
Housing: All of the volunteers will be staying at a house a few minutes away from the Ridgecrest Conference Center.
Meals: Dinners will be provided for us at Ridgecrest each night. We ask that you bring your favorite breakfast food to share.
What will we be doing? Essentially, we will be doing everything we possibly can to make Missions Extravaganza the best event that it can be. This will include set up and clean up stuff, leading women to conferences, carrying luggage for participants, waiting tables in the Ridgecrest dining hall, participating in worship sessions, shuttling women around from building to building, and a variety of other odd jobs that may present themselves. This is the very first year that Missions Extravaganza will feature the SHINE volunteers, so there will be some experimentation and trial and error in where, what, and when we will be doing things. Just come ready to serve God by loving these ladies!
What to Bring:
  • A servant’s heart and loving attitude
  • Bible
  • Sleeping bag, pillow, sheets, air-mattress (whatever will make you comfy)
  • Jeans and other important clothing items. A t-shirt for the weekend will be provided to you.
  • Jacket or sweatshirt
  • GOOD WALKING SHOES
  • PJs
  • Cosmetics/Toiletries
  • Towel
  • Your favorite breakfast item to share (cereal, juice, fruit, etc.)
How to Register: Click the link below to go to the online registration page. We will be in touch with you soon!

SHINE - Young Leader's Network

SHINE on Facebook

In 2007, WMU NC brought together a group of young women and began engaging them to discover what it takes to get young women involved in missions and ministry. WMU NC has challenged the young women to use their ideas to lead young women in our state to understand their calling to live missional lifestyles and to challenge and equip them to do so.

One of the “firstfruits” of the young leaders group was an event called SHINE. (Read more about it here.) The young leaders plan to expand their efforts to other areas to meet the need to involve young women in missions. Expect to see more exciting “fruits” as they continue to labor in this endeavor!

We need your help getting the word out! We are trying to build a database of young women. If you are in this age group or you know a young woman this age, please send your name or names of young women (including their complete address and e-mail) to the WMU office at cgarrison@wmunc.org or Attn: Cathy Garrison, PO Box 18309, Raleigh, NC 27619. Please do not send any names of anyone older than 34.

If you would like to know more about new ministries with young women, please contact our Youth Specialist.

SHINE

SHINE was a unique missions event for young women ages 18-29. It was held October 3-5, 2008, at University Hills Baptist Church in Charlotte. The event was planned by a group of young leaders who want to encourage their peers to engage in missions and SHINE for Christ, and it featured mission projects, worship time and speakers, "impact sessions", and plenty of fellowship!

The mission projects were the most unique feature of the event: participants went out into the Charlotte community for most of the day on Saturday to SHINE the light of Christ hands-on, face-to-face. This gave them an opportunity to put the things they were learning over the weekend into practice! Another unique aspect was the "impact sessions" - participants were placed into small groups with others who were at a similar stage in life to go through a study of 1 Peter, learning to apply the Scripture in their lives, discussing with each other issues they face as Christian young women and drawing encouragement and advice from each other. These were not the only unique factors of the event, though. The fellowship time and even the worship and speakers were very different from any other retreat you have attended! Look for more exciting opportunities for young women like this in the future!
